{"id":20755,"date":"2023-05-15T12:45:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T10:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/?p=20755"},"modified":"2023-06-23T15:39:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T13:39:50","slug":"manage-windows-software-using-chocolatey-package-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/en\/2023\/05\/15\/manage-windows-software-using-chocolatey-package-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Manage Windows software using Chocolatey package manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time:<\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chocolatey.org\/\" title=\"Chocolatey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chocolatey<\/a> is a Windows package manager from command line (CLI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who uses Linux operating system know well what is a package manager as is an essential component of the OS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also some package manager for Windows, like Winget, Scoop and Chocolatey, this last is one of the most popular, has a large community, and it integrates well with other software and has thousands of packages that can be installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let see the main advantages using a package manager:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Checksum verify in order to legitimate package integrity and authenticity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide simple tools for installation, upgrade and uninstallation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manage dependencies for package consistency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check updates to provide last software versions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chocolatey web site provides an exhaustive documentation about program installation and usage. Here the system requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows 7+\/Windows 2003+ (Server Core also, but not Windows Nano Server)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windows PowerShell v2+ (not PowerShell Core aka PowerShell 6 yet)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>.NET Framework 4.x+<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed you can launch it from command line by typing <strong>choco<\/strong> (use <em>-i<\/em> option to see all available options).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"utilizzare-chocolatey-da-linea-di-comando-bed4dee2-83bd-4d6e-a2e7-e097cf996f30\">Use Chocolatey from command line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let see the main commands. All the commands must be executed as Administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To install a package:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>choco install packagename<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To update a package:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>choco upgrade packagename<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To update all packages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>choco upgrade all<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To uninstall a package:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>choco uninstall packagename<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To check all obsolete packages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>choco outdated<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see and search all packages from Chocolatey <a href=\"https:\/\/community.chocolatey.org\/packages\" title=\"Chocolatey community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"utilizzare-chocolatey-tramite-gui-2ac0f65f-88c3-46e8-846d-42ea5352cea5\">Use Chocolatey from GUI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer to use Chocolatey from graphical interface there are various GUI availables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have installed Chocolatey GUI available <a href=\"https:\/\/community.chocolatey.org\/packages\/ChocolateyGUI\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, but you can use other GUI like <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/marticliment\/WingetUI\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WingetUI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this GUI you can easily search, install, update, uninstall packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"615\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-1024x615.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-1024x615.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-1536x922.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey-660x396.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.digitalking.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chocolatey.jpg 2044w\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chocolatey GUI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On &#8220;This PC&#8221; you find the list of installed software using Chocolatey, in &#8220;chocolatey&#8221; tab you can search for the sofware to install that are in the Chocolatey &#8220;repository&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-infobox advgb-infobox-wrapper has-text-align-center advgb-infobox-890cbb13-264f-456c-ae2e-a955e1d92abb\"><div class=\"advgb-infobox-wrap\"><div class=\"advgb-infobox-icon-container\"><div class=\"advgb-infobox-icon-inner-container\"><i class=\"material-icons-outlined\">error<\/i><\/div><\/div><div class=\"advgb-infobox-textcontent\"><h3 class=\"advgb-infobox-title\">Important<\/h3><p class=\"advgb-infobox-text\">If you already have installed software downloaded from Internet you must first uninstall them as they aren&#8217;t installed using Chocolatey so they aren&#8217;t recognized as installed packages.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Installation \/ update \/ uninstallation of a package can be done easily using Chocolatey GUI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To install a package, search it, then just right click on it and Install, wait until done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed you can find the package in &#8220;This PC&#8221; tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time you open the GUI the program check all installed packages, and if there is an update the package is marked as Obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To update it just right click on it and choose Updgrade.
